Space Is the Place

As a bridge between Tolson's Futurafrique and Mackey's Song of the Andoumboulou, you might want to watch Sun Ra's Space Is the Place. If you don't have time for the whole film, you could just watch a very short excerpt where Sun Ra introduces himself. Or you can just listen.

Also relevant is Sun Ra's Altantis (1969), an album that features songs such as "Mu" and "Lemuria." For background, you can check out James Churchward's The Sacred Symbols of Mu (1933) and William Scott-Elliot's The Lost Lemuria (1904) over at Google Books.

You might want to look up Leo Frobenius & think about his legacy.  Responsible for the theory of "African Atlantis," he also coined the word paideuma that had such an effect on Pound.  His book Atlantis: Volksmaerchen und Volksdichtungen Afrikas (1921-23) remains one of the singlemost important collections of African oral literature.

Another key text might be Marcel Griaule's Conversations with Ogotemmeli: An Introduction to Dogon Religious Ideas (1965).
